Praise from the Wine Spectator

By Bruce Neyers

Saturday 31st August, 2024

We were delighted to see our name in the latest issue of ‘Wine Spectator’ along with the review by Tim Fish of our 2021 Left Bank Red. We are enthusiastic about this wine and think you will be as well. Here’s what Tim had to say:

“Rather tight at the moment, but well-structured and refined, with cherry and currant flavors accented by notes of underbrush and cedar as this builds tension toward wiry tannins. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2025 through 2031. 90 POINTS – T.F.”

The gravel-soil parcel of vines at the southern border of our Conn Valley Ranch sits on the left bank of Conn Creek as it flows through our property on the way to the Napa River. The gravel base gives the wine from those vines a combination of attractive minerality and bright, cherry-like flavors, both soft and generous. The underlying charm suggests we hold on to some for drinking in the future.

This time of year is especially important for individual vine care. Here, Rodrigo works to remove suckers, lateral shoots, and basal leaves. The basal leaves store Potassium, which buffers the pH of the wine, affecting both color and flavor. It’s tedious work, requiring years of experience. He is finishing the first of the three passes in our Pump Block that are part of a normal season.
