We’ve been impressed with the team from Flatiron Wines & Spirits since they opened their store in south Manhattan a few years ago. They bring a new and fresh look to the craft of retailing fine wines and spirits, so we were delighted to see Neyers wines featured in their latest brochure. Here’s what they had to say:
‘We’ve written about Neyers Vineyards (one of our favorites) before, so this is just a quick recap: After making wines during California’s Golden Era for Mayacamas and Joseph Phelps, Bruce Neyers and his wife Barbara established their own winery. Precisely when it became totally uncool to do so, Neyers started making wines in a style that emphasized finesse and elegance – just like the great wines of France Bruce bought and sold working for Kermit Lynch (work he continues to this day).
Sage Canyon Red 2014 This is probably the very best value in Californian red wine that we have ever come across. This is a Rhone blend dominated by Carignan, made in a super-traditional style, down to the foot-trod whole clusters. Astonishingly, the Carignan grapes come from vines planted in 1870! See the photos below. The wine has that same magical combination of richness and freshness that you might find in a top bottling from, say, Maxime Magnon.’
Thanks, guys. High praise indeed! We still have some of our 2014 Sage Canyon Red available. It’s a blend that includes some Syrah, some Mourvèdre, some Grenache and 45% Carignan from those spectacular old vines in Oakley, CA.
