2009 Chardonnay Napa Valley
In contrast to the clay-loam soil common to the Carneros District vineyards, on the northern edge of the San Francisco Bay, the Nord family Trio Vineyard, in Yountville, is characterized by an outcropping of gravel mixed with loam. This makes for a crisper and more mineral (sometimes called earthy) flavor to the wine. The fruit component is pure. The finish is long, with notes of lime, pear and brioche. One taster who visited us recently compared this bottling, with its combination of nerve and spice, to a Puligny-Montrachet. Ironically, 2009 is also considered a legendary year in Burgundy; earlier this year, a respected producer there told me that 2009 is probably the best vintage in his lifetime. We might feel similar about the 2009 Napa Valley vintage one day, so plan to bring in enough bottles of Chardonnay to last for a few years. Three weeks ago, we drank a bottle of our 2005 Napa Valley Chardonnay, and it’s more charming now than ever.
